My husband teaches and studies alot about church history and as you said, it one truly looks at the different heresies of Pre-Council of Nicea then I think one would find themselves in three of four different camps at once!
The whole same substance, difference substance, a little of both is very interesting from a historical standpoint; especially in context with how some of the RCC and Reformation rituals and practices came about.

Search for the Origins of Christian Worship by Paul F. Bradshaw is a very nice read.

As for the Templars (grin), come from a looooooong line of Freemasons myself, so I adore all the intrigue and speculation between Templars and Freemasonry...very good stuff
