These mysteries are sort of a satire of the age of great mystery writing. In this middle novel of the series some of them are mentioned like Lord Peter Wimsey. There is humor and a whole lot of fun.

In this novel Lord Burford has discovered the talkies. He can't get enough of them  and the stars. When the great producer, Cyrus S. Haggermeir, head of the Haggermeir Pictures Corporation, askes Lord Burford if he can come to scout the house for an upcoming movie Burford is thrilled but reluctant. When Haggermeir says he will bring Rex Ransom along well Lord Burford can not say no to actually meeting his favorite adventure star. In the meantime, Lady Geraldine is trying to decide between two beaus-Paul Carter, the famous British athelete, and Hugh Quartus, a struggling young artist. So she decides to be naughty and invites them both to gauge their reactions. A few surprise guests invite themselves to the house party-the author of the script, the odious Arlington Gilbert and his secretary, and Lady Burford's long lost cousin from Australia and her husband, Cecily and Sebastian. However it is not until Laura Lorenzo, art film star, arrives unexpectedly,is murdered and her mink coat cut into Swiss cheese does the story take off.

These stories are great fun and easy to read. You know that once Inspector Wilkins shows up and this time with a famous member of Scotland Yard detectives, St. John Allgood, in tow the fun will really begin. The reader knows from the beginning who will solve the case and it won't be the overstuffed Allgood. I rate this one a solid 8.
