Classics You Did NOT Like? |

What classics did you just find too hard to read? Which would you recommend others to "steer clear of"?

Tess of the D'urbervilles, unless like me you have to study it at school... ugh. What a slog.
And I have a love-hate relationship with Wuthering Heights: I really liked the book, but I just about detested every single one of the characters, up to and including the narrator. So if you like some rapport with characters, I'd advise steering clear of this... |

I've just finished re reading Wuthering Heights and I had forgotten how loathesome they all were, apart from Mr Lockwood who just sat and listened to the tale! The worst of the lot was Healthcliff's son Linton...a true creep!

Ha! it seems English classes have a lot to answer for!
I "suffered" through Lord of the Flies (which I might have otherwise enjoyed) |

I love Jane Austen! Yet I must admit that I did not enjoy reading "Emma". I hope to read it again someday to see if I still dislike it, because I have greatly enjoyed the rest of her novels!

I agree wholeheartedly on Wuthering Heights. One of my least favorite books of all times.
Along with that, anything by Papa Hemmingway makes me ill. |

OH, I loved Lord of the Files. Wuthering Heights was a book i'd say that i did have a love-hate relationship with to. I didn't like the main characters.
But for me the one book that i hated to read and would of burned, was Mark Twains "A connecticut yankee." ~ pinkturtle |

I heard that comment, Lyndl! I detest Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad, but I teach it anyway to my Advanced Placement Literture class because it shows up on the AP test so often. Also hated Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. Nor am I crazy about Wuthering Heights. But I liked Silas Marner. |

I loved reading Emma!!! I actually watched the film with Jeremy Northam and Gwyneth Paltrow first and then read the book but it was wonderful. It's hard to get past all the dialogue and really think about what is being said in the story but it is one of my favorite periods of European History so of course I would like it. I also admit to owning every Jane Austen book ever published in multiple different editions. I also have lots of film versions...although I didn't like the 2000 release of Mansfield Park because it strays so far from the actual story. Could it get any better than Pride & Prejudice with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle though? Sorry, book discussions, not movies....

I think it is so interesting to see the list of books that people are posting and see how some people's favorites are other's LEAST favorites.
I did NOT like Wuthering Heights but I DID like Lord of The Flies and Tess of the D'Ubervilles. Of course all these books I read in high school. It might be interesting to see if my opinions would change if I read them now. |
