Someone posted this question on LinkedIn and I found it fun to think about:

What 3-5 industries do you think will be MOST and LEAST successful 5 years from now?
Here are some people's answers. What are yours?
MOST
1. Alcoholic Beverages
2. Nanotechnology applications
3. Defense Contracting
LEAST
1. Private Health Insurance
2. Automotive - Domestic
3. Tourism
Most:
1. Aquarium construction and maintenance
2. At home health care
3. Fire arms and ammunition
Least:
1. Movie and Film
2. Geotechnical engineering and materials testing
3. Religion
Most
1. Green Industries [renewable sources]
2. Service Industries [professional workers]
3. Science & Technology [most advantages of machines or medicine]
Least
1. Weapons industries [making any weapons]
2. Information technology sectors [Apple or Microsoft or AT & T]
3. High Tech industries [computer chip makers]
MOST:
1. Energy - this includes fossil fuel companies as well as alternative energy companies. We can't live without energy.
2. Food - we can't live without food, but what kind? It's an industry that will never go away, it employs lots of people, and someone always figures out a way to make it profitable.
3. Water - it may surprise some people, but we can't live without water either. Lots of opportunity in the future.
LEAST
1. Manufacturing - let's face it, we've lost this war. If it can be made more cheaply somewhere else....it will be.
2. Consumer goods and services - after the wipeout in financial markets, imploding 401K plans, upside down mortgages, and declining incomes, consumers are in no mood to buy something they like but don't really need.
3. Real estate and construction - the days of overnight real estate millionaires are over. It will take at least 5 years to clean up the mess in real estate.
