37 year old Holly Fisher longs for a family. Growing up in Seattle
without a father or grandparents, she wonders what it would be like to
have a heritage, a place of belonging. Holly is furious when her mother,
Esther, reveals a secret; Holly's grandmother and uncles are still
alive, and living in an Amish community in Lancaster County,
Pennsylvania. Esther, who is guilt ridden, yearns to see her family
again, before it is too late, but she is afraid to face them alone, and
begs Holly to accompany her.
Can Holly and her mother put the past behind them and heal? Will Esther's family accept her back into the fold again? Will they all have the power to forgive each other?
I liked the idea of the storyline in this novel, but I did not find the character of Holly very likeable. I can understand someone being upset about that kind of secret being kept from them, but Holly was too hard on her mother and for most of the story treated her very disrespectfully. I just wanted to tell her, get over yourself! Your a grown woman, not a teenage girl.
